1-yr-old boy killed in I-12 crash

On Wednesday, Sept. 14th, shortly after 7:15 a.m., State Police Troopers responded to a two vehicle crash on Interstate 12 near Pumpkin Center Road in Tangipahoa Parish.

One-yr-old Benjamin DeLaune of Livingston was killed in the crash.

The initial investigation revealed that George Johnson, 28, of Kentwood, was driving a 2006 GMC Sierra east on I-12 in the left lane.

At the same time, a 2019 Hyundai Elantra was eastbound on Interstate 12 directly in front of the GMC. For reasons still under investigation, the GMC hit the back of the Hyundai.

Despite DeLaune being properly buckled in a rear-facing child seat, he had serious injuries in the crash. He was transported to a local hospital where he died the next day from his injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai was properly restrained and had moderate injuries.

Johnson was transported to a local hospital. Johnson was properly buckled and had minor injuries.

As part of the ongoing investigation, toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis. This crash remains under investigation and Troopers will forward their findings to the Tangipahoa Parish District Attorney’s office for consultation of criminal and/or traffic violations pending the completion of the investigation.
