11 shootings in four days leave six people dead

BATON ROUGE — Since Thursday, Jan. 8, East Baton Rouge Parish has seen 11 separate shootings, several of them fatal. This comes after Mayor-President Sid Edwards’ first State of the City address, which boasted early progress on crime declining.

One of Edwards’ main focuses has been on the city’s crime, and his address focused on significant reductions in both violent and property crime across the parish. According to statistics he shared, shootings in Baton Rouge were down 18% in 2025, compared to the year before.

In addition, homicides are down 13%, and citywide crime has dropped 15%, he shared.

11 shootings in four days

As of Sunday evening, there have been 11 shootings since Thursday morning, and 13 people were injured. Of those 13, six people died of their injuries.

  • Thursday, Jan. 8: 3 shooting incidents
  • Friday, Jan. 9: 2 shooting incidents
  • Saturday, Jan. 10: 4 shooting incidents
  • Sunday, Jan. 11: 2 shooting incidents

On Thursday, there were multiple fatal shootings. The first incident happened around 8:15 a.m. on Alaska Street where a 27-year-old man was shot and killed after a domestic incident. According to BRPD, a person in connection with the shooting was identified and arrested in Tangipahoa Parish.

Later on Thursday, an 18-year-old woman died after a shooting inside her home. The woman’s 19-year-old ex-girlfriend turned herself in later that day.

Officers responded to 3800 block of Ozark Street just after 9:30 p.m. where a 16-year-old victim died from an apparent accidental shooting. One person was arrested.

On Friday, BRPD responded to two separate shootings during the night. Just before 6 p.m., officers responded to a man shot several times at Gus Young and N. 44th Street. He was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

After 7 p.m., a shooting at Middlesex St. and 68th Avenue, near Airline and Scenic highways, injured one person, who was transported to a hospital by a private vehicle.

Over the weekend, BRPD responded to four separate shootings on Saturday, starting with an overnight shooting in the 4100 block of N Foster Drive near a convenience store with a 53-year-old man injured, BRPD said.

In the next shooting, which happened at 1:20 p.m. around Heidel Ave. and W. Brookstown Drive, Javen Grisby, 16, was injured from a gunshot wound to the head and transported to a hospital in critical condition. He ended up dying from his injuries.

Around 5 p.m. Saturday, a double shooting on Wood Drive left a 17-year-old girl dead and a man injured. She, the man a third person were in a vehicle when UWK has learned they were targeted and their vehicle shot at multiple times. The young woman died on the scene. The man had minor injuries and a third person in the vehicle was not injured.

EBR Schools Superintendent LaMont Cole shared the following statement, in part: “We are heartbroken by the senseless violence that took the life of E’myrie Walker, a student at Northside Academy…The loss of a young life to violence is devastating and deeply felt across our school community. There are no words that can fully ease this pain, but we stand together in mourning and in support of one another.”

Hours later on Saturday around 11:10 p.m., officials responded to a shooting on Convention Street where a 31-year-old man was found dead on his porch.

Sunday saw two shootings where East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies responded. The first was a shooting on Maverick Ave. Jerrod Jermaine Dorsey, 19, drove himself to a hospital with a gunshot wound, but later died of his injuries. The second reported shooting was at a home on Riverdale Ave E around 3 p.m. The victim in that shooting had non-life-threatening injuries, per officials.
