BATON ROUGE — A 20-year-old woman was killed Halloween night in Baton Rouge after a 19-year-old driver allegedly ran a red light, according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office. The teen driver was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while impaired.
East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash around 10:40 p.m. on Oct. 31 at the intersection of Coursey Blvd. and George O’Neal Rd. When they arrived, a witness told deputies that a vehicle traveling west on George O’Neal ran a red light while turning left onto Jones Creek Road.
At the same time, a second vehicle was traveling eastbound on Coursey and collided with the passenger side of the first vehicle in the intersection.
According to officials, the front-seat passenger of the second vehicle, Jacqueline Carmona, was unresponsive after the crash and had to be extricated by St. George Fire Department firefighters.
Carmona was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Both drivers voluntarily submitted to Intoxilyzer tests, according to EBRSO. The driver of the first vehicle, Hector Munoz, 19, registered a blood alcohol concentration of 0.06 percent.
Arrest documents state that Munoz admitted to deputies he had consumed alcohol “a considerable amount of time before the crash occurred.”
Munoz was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for underage operating while impaired, as his B.A.C. exceeded the legal limit of 0.02 percent for drivers under 21.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be filed once it is complete.
