19-year-old killed in Labor Day shooting on Government Street

BATON ROUGE — A 19-year-old man is dead and another wounded after gunfire erupted early Labor Day morning on Government Street.

Baton Rouge Police said Roderick Forkner, 19, was shot around 3 a.m. September 1 in the 5000 block of Government Street near South Foster Drive. Detectives said someone in a dark-colored sedan opened fire on Forkner’s vehicle, hitting both him and another man.

Both victims were taken to a hospital, where Forkner later died from his injuries. The second victim is expected to survive.

Investigators have not released any information about possible suspects or a motive.
