BATON ROUGE — A story about an officer delivering a baby is now responsible for reuniting a different officer delivering a baby 20 years ago!
In May, UWK reported on Baton Rouge Police Corporal Jason Lee, who helped deliver a baby on Greenwell Springs Rd. in May 2024. After that report was posted to Facebook, that got two families talking to each other. That started what would become a reunion 20 years in the making.
20 years ago
Two decades ago, Andrea Morales and her husband experienced a similar moment. As they rushed to the hospital, their baby decided it was time to arrive.
“I was actually in labor for 13 hours, and the doctor told me to wait till my contractions were closer together,” Andrea Morales tells UWK.
“Around 7 pm, my water broke, and I called my husband to tell him it was time to go to the hospital. On Florida Boulevard and Little John, I felt a lot of pressure, and so I had to push. And I did, and her head was out.”
BRPD Officer Kenny Brown, who was on patrol that day, noticed the frantic scene on the side of the road. Initially, he assumed it was a hit-and-run incident.
“I remember the driver getting out and running back toward me,” Officer Brown expressed. “Instead, he said, ‘My wife is having a baby. Now!'”
Depending on his training from 18 years before, Officer Brown moved into action, helping to deliver the baby right there on the side of the highway.
“I was in the delivery room when my daughters were born. It was the ‘what ifs’ that started going through my mind,” he shared. “I was pretty nervous.”
Despite the nerve-wracking situation, the baby girl was born healthy and happy. Fast forward 20 years and a chance encounter on UWK’s Facebook page brought Andrea and Officer Brown back together.
Morales tells UWK there were many people involved, including EMS workers and another couple that stopped to help that night. Most of them, she says she has reunited with. Officer Brown was the last piece of the puzzle she really wanted to put back together
Officer Brown’s wife Stephanie Brown said, “I saw an article about the officer who delivered a baby on Florida Boulevard, and my husband and I talked about it all day. He delivered a baby on Florida Boulevard about 20 years ago.”
That’s how the reunion started. A simple Facebook post got the two families talking only to meet face-to-face 20 years later.
“It was like a piece of me was missing,” said Officer Brown. “It just brought it all back and filled in the blanks for me.”
