22-yr-old fleeing police accused of killing woman in wreck

DARRIEN ROGERS, 22

Around 10pm Saturday night, a wreck left a 49-yr-old dead after she ended up pinned beneath her own car.

It happened in the 900 block of Scenic Hwy. when Darrien Rogers, 22, of Baton Rouge, was driving a 2014 Dodge Charger.

BRPD said an officer spotted Rogers driving west into the eastbound lanes of Choctaw Dr. at speeds up to 100 mph. Rogers allegedly drove through red lights and barely missed hitting nearby drivers when the officer started pursuing with lights and sirens.

Instead of stopping, Rogers allegedly sped in excess of 100mph. As Rogers got to Scenic Hwy. near Fuqua, he allegedly refused to stop at the red light and ended up hitting a Chevy Cruz on the driver side. She ended up pinned beneath her own car and died on the scene. The victim has been identified as Sherell Weston, 49, of Baton Rouge.

Rogers was arrested and charged with manslaughter, aggravated flight from an officer, red light violation and driving on the wrong side of the Hwy.

Officials are investigating whether Rogers is a member of a street racing group and whether he was involved in any of the street racing that took place Saturday night in Baton Rouge.

Sources have said Rogers may have just finished street racing when he took off on Scenic Hwy., the same time an officer spotted him. Instead of stopping however, Rogers allegedly attempted to run from police, at which time he hit Weston’s vehicle, killing her from the impact.
