3 Southern University band members killed changing a tire

Three Southern University Human Juke Box band members died while changing a flat tire on the side of I-49 north of Natchitoches.

BATON ROUGE — Tyran Williams, 19, Dylan Young, 21, and Broderick Moore, 19, were changing a flat tire on a 1999 Jeep Laredo that stalled on the northbound shoulder of I-49 when a big rig drifted off the road and hit the left side of the jeep.

All three of the young men were members of Southern’s Human Juke Box.

The 1997 Freightliner was driven by 62-year-old Clyde Gay. Officials are still trying to figure out why he drifted out of the lane.

Williams, Young and Moore were all pronounced dead on the scene, and Gay, who was buckled, suffered no injuries.

Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies, Louisiana State Police and Natchitoches Regional Medical Center EMS all responded to the scene of the crash.

Moore was a freshman music major from Cedar Hill, TX. Dylan Young was a sophomore mechanical engineering major who was also from Cedar Hill, and Tyran Williams was a freshman music major from Irving, TX.

The Southern University President-Chancellor Dennis J. Shields took to Facebook to share his condolences and share counseling resources for students who may need emotional support after the loss of their classmates, teammates, and friends.

A part of the post reads,”Southern University students, I know that the sudden loss of a classmate or friend can be devastating. I encourage you to reach out to someone you trust to talk about your feelings. Know that the University Counseling Center is also here to assist you.”

Governor John Bel Edwards also took to social media and said:

“We join the Southern University family and especially the Human Jukebox Marching Band in mourning the deep loss of the three students whose lives were tragically cut short after yesterday’s accident. They were dedicated to their education, incredibly talented and provided joy to everyone who had the opportunity to hear them play as part of one of the greatest college bands in the nation. Please join me in praying for the families of Dylan Young, Brody Moore and Tyron Williams, their fellow band members, friends and all who knew and loved them.”
