4-yr-old child dies after Christmas Eve drowning

A father and son were on the BREC Frenchtown Conservation Area trails when Matias Stricker Abreau, 4, went missing and allegedly involved in a drowning.

Central Police Chief Roger Corcoran said they received a call for help around 2:40pm saying the boy went missing.

East Baton Rouge’s Sheriff’s Office, Central, Baton Rouge, Zachary and St. George Fire Departments all assisted as they frantically looked for the little boy.

That’s when two firefighters spotted him in the Amite River drowning nearly an hour after he was reported missing. One of the firefighters jumped in the frigid water to grab the little boy and brought him to the embankment. Firefighters started administering CPR immediately.

The little boy was transported to an area hospital where he fought for his life. He was then transferred to Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge where he died shortly before midnight.

Chief Corcoran said they have turned the investigation over to EBRSO. East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is now leading the investigation into the alleged drowning and the child’s death.
