The owner of a pit bull terrier, Erick Lopez, 20, has been arrested and charged with negligent homicide.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office was called in to investigate a deadly dog attack of a small child. EMS and the St. George Fire Department called EBRSO after they responded to the attack.
It happened Friday evening at 6:35 in the 25000 block of Kendalwood Road, off of Hoo Shoo Too Rd.
A 7-year-old little girl was transported to the hospital after she was attacked by a dog while at a relative’s home. Officials say she was in the yard playing when the dog “viciously attacked her.”
The relative did try to intervene and hit the dog with a walking cane but that did not stop the dog. The little girl was transported to the hospital with multiple dog bites to her face and substantial damage to her skull. She later passed away as a result of her injuries.
“This is an awful, heart-breaking tragedy,” Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said. “My heart goes out to this family, and they will remain in my prayers.”
Lopez told officials he was not present during the attack but that the dog would roam the neighborhood.
EBRSO homicide is currently investigating the case.
Animal Control was notified and has the dog in custody.
