GONZALES —- A 90-year-old from Lafayette died after a two-vehicle crash in Ascension Parish on July 17th.
It was just after 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday when Louisiana State troopers responded to Hwy. 74 at Chester Diez Road in Ascension Parish.
Jean Ducote, 90, of Lafayette, died in the crash.
The preliminary investigation reveals that a 2012 Mazda 6 was headed east on Hwy. 74 approaching Chester Diez Road. At the same time, a 2014 Ford Escape was also going east on Hwy. 74 directly behind the Mazda.
For reasons still under investigation, as the Mazda was attempting to make a right turn onto Chester Diez Road, the Ford failed to brake, and crashed into the back of the Mazda. As a result of the impact, the Mazda was pushed off the roadway into a ditch.
Ducote was a rear seat passenger in the Mazda. Despite being properly buckled at the time of the crash, she had serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.
On July 18th, Ducote died from to her injuries at the hospital. The driver and an additional passenger of the Mazda were both properly buckled at the time of the crash, sustained serious injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital.
The driver of the Ford, who was also buckled at the time of the crash, had moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Impairment is not suspected, but standard toxicology samples from both drivers were submitted for analysis.
This crash remains under investigation.
