Man arrested, accused in rapes of child he babysat for more than two years

BATON ROUGE — A 37-year-old man has been arrested in repeated rapes of a child between 2019 and 2021.

Santroy Jefferson, of Jonesville, La., was booked with three counts of first-degree rape of a child younger than 13 and one count each of sexual battery and indecent behavior with a juvenile, according to booking records.

The investigation that led to Jefferson’s arrest began in March 2021 when Baton Rouge Police were alerted by police in North Carolina that a 9-year-old girl had reported sexual assaults in Baton Rouge by a man who babysat her beginning in January 2019 and continuing for more than two years, Jefferson’s arrest warrant said.

The girl told investigators about crimes that happened at an apartment and a hotel in Baton Rouge. She told police her mother was at work and Jefferson was caring for her when the crimes occurred, the warrant said.

She explained that she didn’t report the crimes when they happened because “the Defendant told her not to tell anybody what happened,” the warrant said. “She was afraid of him.”

The warrant for Jefferson’s arrest was issued in June 2025. Court records show he was arrested at noon Thursday on Lafayette Street downtown.
