Addis PD surprises family in time for Christmas

The Addis Police Department surprised a family of three with help just in time for Christmas.

The department gifted the Prestridge family $640 on Thursday morning. The money was raised from donations by the officers who decided to grow beards.

“Since I became Chief in 2001, we’ve had a clean-shaven policy,” said Addis Police Chief Ricky Anderson. “We suspended that, and we let guys grow beards that were within reason, 1/4 of an inch at most, and they had to pay $10 per month.”

The fundraising efforts started in July and the police department informed the Prestridge family about the gift on Wednesday.

Jacob and Sarah Prestridge lost their home in Central and a pair of vehicles during the Flood of 2016.

The couple said they had rebuilt their home, but mold invaded it, and they had to leave. The mold forced Sarah to undergo multiple blood transfusions.

After leaving their home, the couple, along with their now 6-year-old son little Jacob, lived in a FEMA trailer in Denham Springs for two years.

“For us, this was a prayer answered,” Sarah said of Thursday’s event. “We had thoughts like ‘are we ever going to get ahead?’ The timing was just right. We were praying at a prayer group, and the very next day, the chief showed up at our door.”

Sarah said she thought Anderson’s visit was a hoax at first

“I thought it was a scam at first,” she said. “I was super shocked.”

Jacob and Sarah said members of the River Church in Addis nominated them for the surprise. The Prestridge family has been a member of the church for two years.

“Moments like this lift your spirits,” Sarah said. “It’s nice to receive blessings, too, and to be shown that you’re on someone’s heart. We’re super grateful to the church and the police department.”

“I’m proud of my guys who did it,” Anderson said of the donations. “I’m glad we were able to help a family with it.”
