ALDI to buy out hundreds of Winn-Dixie grocery stores in the Southeast

ALDI grocery stories announced today that the company has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Winn-Dixie and Harveys grocery stories in they continue their grown in the southeast part of the country.

The acquisition of the present-day Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores will add about 400 locations across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.

“Like ALDI, Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket have long histories and many loyal customers in the Southeast and we look forward to serving them in the years to come,” said Jason Hart, CEO, ALDI.

Their plans include adding 120 new stores nationwide in 2023 to reach a total of more than 2,400 stores by year-end.

At a time when many retailers are being forced to shutter their stores due to economic conditions, ALDI’s CEO said they’re “doubling-down on expansion plans, supporting its position as one of the fastest-growing grocers in the country.”

ALDI first started in the Southeast in the mid-1990s and has since invested $2.5 billion in the region, according to the company. Most recently, ALDI deepened its roots in the region, opening its 26th regional headquarters and distribution center in Loxley, Alabama to help support new stores, with plans to open 20 new ALDI locations in the area by the end of the year.

But it appears ALDO is not acquiring all Winn-Dixies and Harveys in the south.

“For those stores we do not convert, our intention is that these continue to operate as Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores,” said Hart.

The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2024, subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions.
