“Mechanical failure” in Amazon truck’s engine blamed for massive I-110 fire Thursday

BATON ROUGE — A mechanical failure in the engine of an Amazon truck is believed to be what caused a massive fire Thursday morning on I-110 near Convention St.

All lanes of I-110 north at Convention St. reopened late Thursday after crews inspected the section of the interstate where the fire occurred. DOTD conducted an “in-depth inspection on all aspects of the elevated highway” before reopening the interstate.

Sources tell UWK that part of the concern was that the fire took place on the interstate and also spread below. The intense heat from the fire along with the sweltering temperatures could have compromised the integrity of the roadway. With DOTD reopening the highway, that does not appear to be an issue.

Baton Rouge fire officials believe the fire started in the engine due to that mechanical failure. The driver of the Amazon truck was able to make it out safely, according to fire officials. They also say that the truck was not carrying any hazardous materials but was full of packages.

Hazmat crews were on the scene monitoring air quality, but there does not appear to be a threat to the community at this time.
