Amazon van catches on fire after loose trailer rips off gas tank, driver hospitalized

CENTRAL — An Amazon driver is at the Baton Rouge General’s Burn Unit after the van she was driving caught on fire.

It was just before 2 p.m. on June 1, 2024 in the 21000 Greenwell Springs Rd. in Central when a pick-up truck lost its trailer. Central Police Chief Roger Corcoran tells UWK the pick-up driver had just dropped off a Jeep to a nearby business that was on his trailer.

After leaving out, the driver got on Greenwell Springs Rd. and was headed southbound on Greenwell Springs Rd. That’s when officials say his trailer somehow came off. It’s still unclear how the trailer came off the truck.

An Amazon van was going northbound on Greenwell Springs Rd. at the same time. When the trailer came off the truck, it ended up in the northbound lane, head on with the Amazon van. The driver of the Amazon van could not avoid the trailer and ended up over it.

“Something on the trailer punctured the gas tank to the Amazon van and the van immediately ignited,” said Chief Corcoran.

The driver was able to escape, but she does have burns to her legs and face. She was transported to the burn unit in Baton Rouge. The driver of the pick-up truck was not injured. He has been ticketed.
