AMITE — An Amite tax preparer is facing charges for attempted theft after the Louisiana Department of Revenue claims he committed tax fraud by fabricating gambling winnings to claim a state income tax refund.
Investigators allege Todd Ramon Mabry submitted a false tax withholding form in the name of an unsuspecting client claiming $158,233 in fabricated winnings at L’Auberge Casino in Baton Rouge. Mabry then attempted to claim a state income tax refund of $25,552 based on those phony gambling winnings, a press release from the Louisiana Department of Revenue said.
Mabry was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on May 13th and is facing several charges, including:
- Attempted theft
- Computer fraud
- Filing false public records
A press release states that an investigation is still ongoing into other persons of interest in connection with the fraud scheme.
Mabry is the 77th person arrested under a joint anti-tax fraud initiative between the Louisiana Department of Revenue and the state attorney general’s office.
