BATON ROUGE — Since December 2013, the Dustin Hamilton Toy Drive has been brightening the holidays for children in need across the Baton Rouge area.
Established by Nanette Hamilton in memory of her son, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Dustin Hamilton—who tragically lost his life on the way back home from a detail in September 2013—the annual toy drive has grown into a cherished tradition of generosity and community support.
Honoring Dustin’s Legacy
Deputy Dustin Hamilton was known for his love of children and often carried toys in his patrol car to comfort kids in distress. After his passing, Nanette began the toy drive to continue his legacy of kindness.
“My son loved children,” Hamilton recalls. “He was a giver, always trying to make things better for kids.”
What started as a small effort has grown significantly, with the drive providing hundreds of gifts to children each year. The team begins collecting toys as early as January to ensure they can meet the needs of local families by Christmas.
Supporting Families in Need
The toy drive works with schools like Bellingrath Elementary and helps families across Central, Louisiana. Last year, it brought holiday joy to over 500 children.
“We don’t just help one child; we support the whole family,” Nanette says. This year, the toy drive has already distributed 126 gifts, a testament to the community’s continued support and the drive’s meaningful impact.
Community Involvement
Nanette leads the initiative with three dedicated volunteers, tirelessly sorting toys by age and gender to ensure every child receives a suitable gift.
“It’s a huge undertaking, but it’s worth it to make sure no child goes without,” she says.
The drive relies heavily on contributions from the community, including donations from those who knew Dustin personally.
