BATON ROUGE — Fire crews extinguished a fire at an apartment complex near O’Neal Lane on Monday afternoon after a suspected lightning strike. Several trapped dogs were rescued from one of the apartment units.
The East Side Fire Department responded to a 16-plex apartment building at the Reserve at White Oak on Aug. 24, which is near S Harrell’s Ferry Road and O’Neal Lane, for a fire after a possible lighting strike from an intense thunderstorm. The fire started just after 2 p.m. in the attic of the apartment building, with several dogs trapped inside one of the units.
According to East Side Fire, firefighters forced entry into the unit and successfully rescued all four dogs, and contained the fire to a single apartment. The Baton Rouge & St. George Fire Department assisted with the rescue and fire extinguishment. The initial investigation indicates the apartment was struck by lightning.
Two East Side Fire Department firefighters and one Baton Rouge firefighter were treated on-site by East Baton Rouge EMS and transported to a local hospital for heat exhaustion. No other injuries were reported.
