ASCENSION — An Ascension Parish deputy was fired and arrested after allegedly bringing contraband into the jail.
Officials say Andrew Wheeler was arrested and charged with one count of introduction of contraband into a penal facility and malfeasance in office.
Wheeler had been employed with the corrections division at APSO for less than a year.
APSO officials say detectives began investigating Wheeler after learning that Wheeler had brought contraband into the jail on at least one occasion.Wheeler admitted to the transactions during an interview and was fired. He was arrested and booked into jail.
The investigation is ongoing.
