BELLE CHASE — A Plaquemines Parish deputy who enjoys spending his spare time painting put a brush to canvas as a gift to the families of two fallen Baton Rouge Police officers, Sgt. David Poirrier & Cpl. Scotty Canezaro.
The BRPD pilots were flying March 26 helping officers who were in pursuit of a Mustang whose driver was topping speeds of 150 mph.
Their helicopter was in the air for a total of 12 minutes before the two crashed at 2:38am and did not survive their injuries. The men were moved from the coroner’s office to their funeral homes on March 29. WATCH PROCESSION
Their joint memorial service is set for April 6th.
“I started painting because I needed some home decor,” said Rodney King Jr. “That slowly transitioned into people commissioning me to paint Saints & fleur de lis along with other sports teams.”
King said he challenged himself to do his first portrait of himself, his mom and grandmother and posted the finished canvas to his social media pages. That’s how he started painting portraits.
King painted both Poirrier & Canezaro late last week as a gift to present to both families.
“I paint officers to show appreciation for their dedicated service and I hope the portraits bring family and friends a smile or even brings back good memories and takes their mind away from reality for a moment,” said King.
Poirrier, 47, was a 17 yr veteran with BRPD with Canezaro, 38, having 16 years with the department.
