ASCENSION PARISH — For Ascension Parish residents with debris from Hurricane Francine, the deadline to register for pickup is Wednesday, Oct. 23 by 5:30 p.m. The federal government approved a disaster declaration in September, giving some parishes (including Ascension) federal assistance with debris pickup, among other services.
To self-report your roadside debris, parish residents are asked to visit the pickup website and fill out the requested fields or call the Citizen Service Center at (225) 450-1200. Residents can also come into the parish government office.
Pamela Mantassa, Ascension Parish Government Deputy CAO and communications director, said that registering for debris pickup gives the parish a good idea of the areas it may have missed in previous checks.
“We want to make sure we know where the debris is,” she said.
Roadside debris must be sorted. Bags are not required, but if using bags, they must be clear. Black garbage bags will not be accepted or picked up.
Piles of leaves will not be picked up unless they are in clear bags.
Before registering on the website, residents are asked to have their piles at the roadside and sorted. Debris must be separated from vegetation and construction materials.
Mantassa said the parish hopes to be finished with all storm debris removal by Thanksgiving.
To date, more than 13,000 cubic yards of debris has been picked up in the parish.
According to the pickup website, more than 1,277 registered piles have already been picked up, with less than 640 piles remaining.
