GONZALES — It was just after 5pm on Wednesday, October 18, when a head-on crash claimed the life of an unborn baby in Ascension Parish.
State Police Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on LA 429 east of Roddy Road in Ascension Parish between a Mitsubishi SUV and Chevy Blazer.
State Police says their investigation so far reveals the 2023 Mitsubishi SUV was headed east on LA 429 with the 2020 Chevrolet Blazer going the opposite direction, west on LA 429. For unknown reasons, the Mitsubishi’s driver crossed the centerline and hit the Chevrolet head-on.
The driver of the Mitsubishi, who was seven months pregnant at the time of the crash, was properly buckled, per State Police. After she was taken to a hospital, doctors notified her that her unborn baby died as a result of the injuries in the crash.
The driver of the Chevrolet was properly buckled and had minor injuries. As part of the ongoing investigation, a toxicology sample was taken from the driver of the Mitsubishi and will be submitted for analysis.
This crash remains under investigation and any charges will be forwarded to the Ascension Parish District Attorney’s Office at the conclusion of the investigation.
