Ascension investigating fentanyl smuggled into jail following inmate overdose

ASCENSION PARISH– The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation to determine how fentanyl was smuggled into the parish jail that resulted in one inmate overdosing and being sent to the hospital.

“Somehow fentanyl was smuggled into my jail, and we’re now investigating that,” said Ascension Sheriff Bobby Webre.

Around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, Peggy Valentine was transported to the emergency room after deputies noticed a medical issue while in her cell. APSO Sheriff Bobby Webre said deputies did give Valentine Narcan before she was taken to a hospital.

Officials say the Ascension inmate’s bloodwork at the hospital showed an overdose of fentanyl in her system. Valentine was later released from the hospital and is back at the prison.

In November 2023, Valentine was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder and home invasion connected to a May 2022 home invasion in Donaldsonville. Officials say Valentine entered her fiance’s girlfriend’s home and began cutting her. Deputies learned that Valentine was dressed in all black and armed with a boxcutter when she entered the home without permission and stabbed the woman while she was asleep in her own bed.

The victim fought off Valentine forcing her to leave. The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later released.
