Ascension Parish parents pleaded not guilty after child allegedly starved to death

GEISMAR — A mother and father had their arraignments and their bond was denied. It comes after charges against the parents of a 5-year-old boy were upgraded to murder after an Ascension Parish Grand Jury indicted Raynisa Young and Marlon Perrilloux.

According to court records, the child weighed just 19 pounds at the time of his death. Young told investigators the last time she recalled bathing her son was around Thanksgiving, nearly five weeks before he died.

Young & Perrilloux went before an Ascension judge where they pleaded not guilty to their charges, including to the upgraded charge of murder. During an arraignment is typically when bond is set. The two were denied bond.

Grand jury indictment

The case was presented to a grand jury on Feb. 2, 2026. Both parents were indicted on one count each of second-degree murder, possession with intent to distribute Schedule I narcotics, and illegal use, possession, or control of a weapon.

Young, 27, and Perrilloux, 32, were originally arrested on Jan. 2, 2026, on charges of negligent homicide and second-degree cruelty to a juvenile. Ascension Parish District Attorney Ricky Babin said Louisiana law allowed prosecutors to pursue second-degree murder charges, and the grand jury determined there was sufficient evidence to upgrade the case.

Under Louisiana law, a conviction for second-degree cruelty to a juvenile carries a maximum sentence of 40 years. A conviction for second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence.

“We plan to proceed to trial as quickly as we can,” Babin told UWK.

Indictment: History of abuse, neglect

On Jan. 1, 2026, around 9:30 p.m., Ascension Parish deputies assisted Perrilloux as he attempted to get his son from their Geismar home to a hospital on Highway 73. According to court records, deputies met Perrilloux at a gas station and transported the child while performing CPR.

The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital at 9:44 p.m.

Deputies noted signs of severe neglect, particularly on the child’s back, neck, and buttocks. The arrest warrant states the child’s left arm and left leg showed deformities consistent with possible past injuries that had healed.

Hospital staff reported the child weighed approximately 19 pounds, measured about 35 inches in length, had a distended abdomen, and showed extremely low muscle mass in his arms and legs, according to court documents.

Investigators questioned both parents following their son’s death. Young told deputies the family lived together on Anderson Road in Geismar. She said the last time she recalled her son moving on his own was about 13 months earlier and that he was not walking, only able to scoot across the floor.

Young said she could not remember the last time she took her son to a doctor and acknowledged she knew she should have sought medical care due to his recent illness and refusal to eat.

She also admitted the last time she remembered bathing her son was around Thanksgiving 2025, nearly five weeks before his death.

UWK reached out to the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services to determine whether the agency had prior involvement with the family. The agency responded, “DCFS did receive three reports on other household members. The reports were not accepted for investigation.”
