LIVINGSTON PARISH — For the 26th year in a row, the Assess the Need program is supporting students in need in Livingston Parish. The program is run by Livingston Parish Assessor Jeff Taylor and his wife, Delia Taylor, to provide essential school supplies like backpacks, notebooks, and writing instruments to students whose families may have difficulties affording those items.
Assess the Need is a not-for-profit program that provides supplies for Livingston Parish students in need of assistance. This year’s campaign anticipates helping around 3,200 students in all the district’s 43 public schools, including Pre-K and Head Start programs, Delia Taylor shared.
On Aug. 5, volunteers helped load supplies for each Livingston Parish school. The drivers took supplies back to their campuses to distribute them to students in need at their school. Classes in the parish started yesterday, Aug. 6.
“Our distribution day is aways a rewarding day,” Livingston Parish Assessor Jeff Taylor said. “It’s the culmination of much work and much generosity from our communities to ensure that we are getting needed supplies to our schools; and in turn, the teachers and counselors at those schools are getting the supplies directly into the hands of our children, so they can feel supported and prepared to learn.”
Volunteers will still accept in-person donations for Assess the Need on Friday, Aug. 7 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 8 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Associated Grocers stores around the parish.
Those locations include Cain’s Family Market in Albany, Livingston, and Springfield; Carter’s Supermarkets in Denham Springs and Walker; Oak Point Fresh Market in Watson; and Village Markets in Port Vincent, Whitehall and Head of Island.
Donations can also be directly dropped off at the Livingston Parish Assessor’s Office Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. You can also mail donations to Assess the Need, P.O. Box 1802, Denham Springs, LA 70727-1802.
Donations can be given directly to volunteers at the stores or sent via Venmo. All donations to Assess the Need are tax-deductible, and all proceeds go to supporting students in need in Livingston Parish, Taylor said.
Taylor said the program is also supported through sponsorships by an array of local businesses and organizations.
