BATON ROUGE — East Baton Rouge residents will have the opportunity to participate in a Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day on Saturday, October 19th, from 9 AM to 1 PM at LSU Touchdown Village on South Quad Drive.
The event restricts waste to non-commercial and household materials and requires an ID for participation. Attendees are advised to remain in their vehicles during drop-off.
Many common household items that can’t be thrown out with regular trash will be accepted at the event. The list of accepted materials includes:
- Acids: Found in many cleaning and automotive products.
- Aerosol cans: Commonly used for paints, cleaners, and deodorants, these can explode under high pressure if not disposed of correctly.
- Auto products: Including used oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, diesel, and oil or fuel filters.
- Cooking oil: Large quantities of cooking oil can clog drainage systems and damage local ecosystems.
- Cleaning products: Items like bleach, bowl cleaners, bug sprays, and wood preservatives.
- Paint and paint thinners: Accepted types include latex, oil-based, stain, varnish, shellac, and other finishes.
- Fluorescent and compact fluorescent bulbs: These energy-efficient bulbs contain small amounts of mercury, which requires special disposal.
- Lawn and garden products: This includes pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and fertilizers, all of which can contaminate soil and water if not properly managed.
- Fire extinguishers and lighter fluid
By collecting these materials, the event helps prevent them from ending up in landfills, where they could potentially leak into the environment and cause harm to ecosystems and water supplies.

However, it’s important to note that certain items will not be accepted at the event. The list of prohibited materials includes:
- Ammunition, explosives, and fireworks
- Non-residential waste
- Radioactive devices, such as smoke or fire detectors
- Medical waste
- Appliances and furniture, power tools, and construction or demolition debris
- Liquids in containers larger than five gallons
This collection event is designed for local residents only, and no commercial waste will be accepted. It provides a valuable service, allowing households to get rid of hazardous materials in a safe way for their families and the environment.
