ST. HELENA PARISH — A 25-year-old man from Baton Rouge died in an overnight crash on Hwy. 1045.
It was around 2:30 a.m. on October 26th when Louisiana State Police troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Hwy. 1045 near Hwy. 43 in St. Helena Parish.
Elijah L. Brumfield, 25, of Baton Rouge, died in the crash.
The investigation so far shows that Brumfield was driving a 2011 Mazda3 west on Hwy. 1045. At the same time, Travis Keller of Slaughter was driving a 2006 Ford F-250 the opposite direction, east on Hwy. 1045. For unknown reasons, the Mazda crossed the centerline and hit Keller head-on.
Troopers say Brumfield was not buckled and was ejected from his car. He died on the scene. Keller, who was properly buckled, had minor injuries.
Troopers learned that Keller was impaired at the time of the crash. Keller was arrested and charged with first offense DWI and other traffic charges, but due to his injuries from the crash, he was released on a summons. He was also released into the care of medical staff at a local hospital.
As part of the ongoing investigation, a routine toxicology sample was taken from both drivers for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
