BATON ROUGE —- Baton Rouge Police and the East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office continue investigating a deadly crash, in which the victim was shot, on Interstate 110 Sunday evening.
It was just before 8 p.m. on February 16 when BRPD responded to Interstate 110 northbound near the Wyandotte St. exit.
Officers initially thought they were responding to a fatal crash. Officials learned that Kimble Evans, 22, had been shot, which may have led up to the crash.
The official cause and manner of death are pending toxicology results, which could take a few more weeks to return, but the preliminary results show Evans was shot the head and it was an accident.
Sources confirm to UWK that Evans was driving at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic on Interstate 110 northbound when he crashed into a vehicle. The driver of that vehicle was injured and was taken to a hospital.
Detectives learned that Evans had a gun in his lap at the time of the crash and somehow, the gun went off, shooting Evans in the head. It’s unclear how the gun went off, if Evans had his hand on the trigger or if the impact of the crash and airbag deploying may have caused it. Sources added that there was no evidence of a bullet going into the vehicle.
Evans died on the scene from the single gunshot wound. At this time, officials are looking into the case as an accidental shooting, but the investigation is ongoing.
