BRPD Chief: Bond for accused drug dealer ‘terribly frustrating’

BATON ROUGE — Baton Rouge Police arrested a man after a search turned up a variety of drugs and 13 guns—three of which were reported as stolen. The day after he was arrested, he was released on a bond the police chief said shows “no consequences” for those accused of serious crimes.

On Sept. 23, Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Detectives, along with SWAT, executed a search warrant in the 3000 block of Conley as part of an investigation. During their search, they found and seized drugs, guns and thousands of dollars in cash. Police arrested Derick Brown, who was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

The next day, Brown’s bond was set for $67,000 by Commissioner Nicole Robinson , who required house arrest and GPS monitoring. Brown posted bond the same day.

Police Chief T.J. Morse said the bond was unacceptable and an affront to the officers working to arrest criminals:

This is terribly frustrating and unfortunately, it’s an example of what we have seen play out far too many times in Baton Rouge. I am not sure how anyone could look at this suspect’s extensive criminal history and numerous serious felony charges he is now charged with and think this is an acceptable bond amount, especially with the amount of drugs and illegal firearms, some of which were stolen, that were in his possession. Our Officers are arresting the bad guys, but it does not help if a message is sent that there are no consequences after the arrest.

I hope that an elected Judge has the chance to review the Commissioner’s decision and a light is shed on some of these very concerning bond decisions.
