Baton Rouge police officer, wife charged with domestic abuse battery

GONZALES — A Baton Rouge police officer and his wife have been arrested and charged in connection with a domestic abuse incident in Ascension Parish earlier this week, UWK has learned.

Solomon Ona, 37, and Tarleshia Atkins, 34, were booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on domestic abuse battery charges on June 12. Both were released on a $2,500 per person bond the same day.

UWK is told that the arrests stem from an incident at their Gonzales home shortly after midnight on June 12. The couple reportedly got into an argument that escalated, resulting in both being taken into custody.

Sources say Ona is currently on medical leave from the Baton Rouge Police Department and will remain on leave as the investigation into what happened continues.

A booking photo of Ona and Atkins was not provided due to Act No. 494, which places restrictions on mugshots released to the media for most offenses with exceptions for certain violent crimes.

Ona became a Baton Rouge police officer in 2012 and was previously recognized for helping save someone’s life during the 2015 Chief’s Awards Banquet, according to the department’s Facebook page.
