BATON ROUGE — A driver and passenger who died in a single-vehicle crash on South Sherwood Forest Blvd. Tuesday night have been identified.
The driver, identified as Jose Maximo Gonzales Ortega, 38, of Denham Springs, crashed into a pole around 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 on S. Sherwood Forest Blvd. near Bricksome Ave. The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when Ortega was unable to make a curve in the road and overcorrected. This caused the vehicle to hit a pole.
Both Ortega and the passenger, Yeni Verali Escobar Alfaro, 28, died on the scene, according to officials. A child was rushed to Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge where she is listed in critical condition.
The crash is still under investigation.
