Woman shot while lying in bed, alleged gunman arrested

BATON ROUGE, La. — A woman, who was lying in bed with her boyfriend, was reportedly hit by a bullet Saturday night, East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office records show.

Lionel Harris, 30, was later arrested and charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder, according to the report.

Sheriff’s deputies say they were called to a home in the 1900 block of Mariner Drive Saturday night. Detectives say the victim and her boyfriend reported hearing gunshots outside of their home. That’s when they say “bullets entered their residence”, the arrest record shows.

The victims said they began covering themselves, but the woman was hit by at least a bullet. The boyfriend told deputies that when the shooting stopped, he went to a bedroom window and saw a man “running away … armed with a semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine.”

The victim says he recognized the alleged gunmen as “Nike,” someone he knew for several years. He told deputies that “Nike,” who deputies say is Harris, fled the scene in a four-door Lexus with dark windows.

Deputies say they found the vehicle and arrested Harris along Southpointe Drive.

On top of the first-degree murder charges, Harris was also charged with criminal damage to property and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Harris was spotted on surveillance cameras before and after the shooting, deputies said.

Deputies say the woman was taken to the hospital, but her injuries were not life threatening.
