ZACHARY — The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is rallying together to support one of their own. Deputy Shaye Reynolds has been off the job for a little over a month now, after being diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Doctors discovered the tumor after years of Reynolds dealing with drop foot issues.
“I had an issue with drop foot for going on two years now,” she told UWK. “I’ve been to many doctors, had many tests done, and they could never determine what was causing it. I’ve even had surgery on what they thought it could be.”
According to The Mayo Clinic, drop foot is a generalized term used to describe difficulty lifting the foot.
“I was tripping over my foot a lot. I’d fallen several times, and was in PT, and it just wasn’t getting any better,” she explained.
After more than two years of no answers and no relief, Reynolds decided it was time to get a second opinion. “I went to a neurologist outside the medical group I was with the first time, and they did an MRI of my brain, and that’s how we found out that I had a brain tumor,” Reynolds said.
Reynolds had surgery over the summer to remove the tumor, which she says was non-cancerous. “They weren’t able to remove it all because of where it was,” Reynolds explained. “I would have bled out. So we just have to keep an eye on it.”
“I’ll go in three months to have another MRI done, just to see what’s going on,” Reynolds continued. “They did have to leave some of it, and if it does start to grow again, then I’ll have to have some radiation. But for now, we’re just going to keep an eye on it.”
To help Reynolds with medical bills, the Easy Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Department organized a benefit dinner on Saturday, August 15.
”My boss and some of the guys from the sheriff’s office took it upon themselves to start this fundraiser for me without me knowing,” Reynolds said. “They’re keeping me out of it because I’m a giver, so this is very hard for me.”
It’s happening from 12 p.m. until plates sell out at the Pride-Chaneyville Substation in Zachary. For $15, you can get red beans and rice, smoked chicken, a roll, and dessert.
”It’s very humbling. I’m just overwhelmed with gratitude and very thankful,” she said.
