BATON ROUGE — Willie Beathley Jr. is using “three Bs” to help local children in a big way.
“Bibles, books, and bicycles. It’s a little program that we’d like to start in a lot of churches and clubs that will specialize in helping children learn to read, love to read, and learn to be moral good people,” he explained.
It doesn’t matter which faith you practice.
“The idea is learn to read, learn facts, learn how to get along with each other, learn to work together, and to cherish what you got,” Bleathley said.
“If you’re Christian, you have to learn the Lord’s Prayer and the 23rd Psalms. If you’re another religion, make some calls and find out what would be comparable for that child, and then you get a bike,” he explained.
Beathley’s long-term goal is to open a facility to help children learn to read.
“80% of kids are not reading at the right level. That’s why I hope to someday have a facility of just nothing but volunteer master reading teachers and concentrating on just reading,” he said. “Even if they can’t read, if a problem arises, I say, when something bad happened in your house, and you get in your bed, put your Bible to your heart, and say, Lord, please help me, please work this out.”
