BATON ROUGE — Ronald Gathe Jr., the first Black U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Louisiana, was fired by the Trump administration, UWK has learned.
Former President Joe Biden nominated Gathe for the position on November 12, 2021, and he was confirmed by the Senate on December 7, 2021.
The White House has terminated at least a dozen U.S. attorneys appointed by Biden. Since the Clinton administration, it has been standard practice for a new administration to select chief prosecutors for the 93 districts across the country.
The Middle District includes Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana Parish.
April Leon, who previously served as the first assistant U.S. attorney for the Middle District, is now acting U.S. attorney. She was the first woman appointed to that role by Gathe.
A Baton Rouge native, Gathe attended St. Francis Xavier School and Catholic High before earning his law degree from Southern University Law Center in 2000. He began his legal career as a law clerk for the 18th Judicial District Court, later establishing his own law practice. He went on to serve as an assistant district attorney for the 19th Judicial District Court and as chief of trials for the 18th JDC.
