BATON ROUGE — As Captain Brett Michael Stassi Jr. continues to fight for his life following the tragic shooting at the Iberville Parish Courthouse, the community is rallying behind him and his family in a show of solidarity and support.
Stassi, a 20-year veteran of the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office and son of Sheriff Brett Stassi, was critically injured Monday night when a suspect opened fire during an interrogation at the courthouse in Plaquemine. Deputy Charles Riley, who also served with the sheriff’s office, was killed in the line of duty.

Now, as Cpt. Stassi remains hospitalized at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, officials are encouraging the public to help by donating blood in his name.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Captain Brett Michael Stassi Jr., who was seriously injured in the line of duty,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “To support Captain Stassi in his recovery, we encourage everyone to visit Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and donate blood in his name. Your donation can make a meaningful difference.”

Community members, fellow law enforcement officers, and supporters from around the region have continued to send messages of prayer and encouragement to the Stassi and Riley families. Sheriff Stassi released a statement thanking the public for the “tremendous outpouring of support, sympathy, and prayers” in the wake of the tragedy.
“Our deputies are deeply hurting as we grieve the loss of one of our own and pray for another’s recovery,” Sheriff Stassi said. “Please continue to keep the men and women of the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office in your thoughts as they navigate this tragedy together.”
