Two teenagers, 16 and 17 years old, were arrested in connection to an attempted carjacking that turned into a deadly shooting of a Southern University student in Baton Rouge.
It happened at the Cadence Apartments (formerly known as the Palisade Apartments) on Scenic Highway around 12:30am on March 12. Baton Rouge Police responded for an attempted carjacking, but it appears the victim ended up shot and later died from his injuries.
The victim has been identified as Javonte Barber, 22, a Southern University student. Officers found his body next to his vehicle in the parking lot. He was transported to a hospital but died of his injuries.
Southern University put out on its social media accounts: “This morning, a Southern University student was fatally wounded in an incident at the Cadence (formerly The Palisades), an off-campus student apartment complex near campus. The University offers its condolences to the student’s family. The Baton Rouge Police Department is investigating, and no further information is available at this time. The University Counseling Center is available for all Southern University students. Counselors can be reached at counselingcenter@subr.edu or 225-771-2480 Monday-Friday. Walk-in support will be available beginning Monday at 8 a.m.”
The two juveniles have been arrested and charged with first degree murder. Because they are juveniles, their names cannot be released.
