BR Fire captain dies after battle with cancer likely caused by fighting fires

BATON ROUGE — The Baton Rouge Fire Department announced that Captain Phillip P. Paternostro, 54, died Aug. 21 after a battle with cancer.

According to Louisiana law, Baton Rouge fire officials said the type of cancer Paternostro developed is presumed to have been caused by being a firefighter.

Paternostro began his career as a firefighter in 2000 and was promoted to captain in 2018. In his 23 years, Paternostro received four lifesaving awards, fire-saving rescue awards, and a lifesaving rescue award.

The funeral for Captain Paternostro will take place at Istroma Baptist Church as follows.

Funeral Service Starts at 11:00AM

The public is welcome to attend.
There will not be a public procession before or after the service.
