WHITE CASTLE — Multiple agencies are currently responding to a very large fire at Nottoway Plantation in White Castle in Iberville Parish.
The fire broke just after 2 p.m. on the south side of the home that faces White Castle. As of 3:30 p.m., firefighters did have most of the fire under control, but not all of it. However, the fire has since intensified and is now out of control with firefighters no longer able to extinguish it, multiple officials tell UWK.
The 166-year-old plantation has significant damage from not only the fire, but also from the smoke.
As of now, there are no reported injuries.
Along with firefighters and the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office, the State Fire Marshal’s Office is sending a crew to Nottoway as well.
Nottoway Plantation was built in 1859 and in 1980, it was converted into a bed and breakfast in White Castle. The plantation is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
