Update: Central Walmart shooting appears to be self-defense after a fight in the parking lot

CENTRAL, La. — It was around 9:20 p.m. on Monday, March 11 when the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office responded to the Walmart in Central for a shooting. That’s at the corner of Wax and Sullivan roads.

One person was shot in the parking lot near the gardening section on Walmart’s property.

Detectives learned that two groups, one group consisting of two people and one group consisting of five people, agreed to meet to arrange a fight between two people.

During this fight, the larger group began ganging up on the group of two, overpowering them, according to EBRSO.

During the fight, one man armed himself with a gun and shot it hitting another man. Everyone fled the scene and the man shot was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

The man who fired the shot agreed to interview with detectives and said the gun was fired “once he feared for his and his friend’s safety in order to stop the fight,” said EBRSO.

“At this time the shooting is believed to be in self defense.”
