Brother of man found dead in burnt vehicle’s trunk: “I felt like I was in a nightmare”

ST. GABRIEL – The family of 28-year-old Jarrous Mitchell, who was found dead and burned in the trunk of a vehicle in St. Gabriel, is still looking for answers a week later.

On February 29, firefighters responded to a vehicle fire at 4445 Point Clair Rd. in St. Gabriel. The East Iberville Parish Fire Department responded to the scene and successfully extinguished the fire. During the firefighting efforts, Mitchell’s body was discovered in the trunk of the vehicle.

As of now, there are no known motives or suspects in this case, and the investigation is currently ongoing.

Mitchell’s older Chad Parker said Mitchell was an outgoing person and his family loved him.

“He was family-oriented, and everybody liked to be around him,” Parker said. “He could meet a group of strangers and win the crowd over. He was just fun to be around, always joking. He was a fun young man to be around.”

Parker said he found out about his brother’s death from a mutual friend the following morning. He said he watched the news the night before and never fathomed the burning car he saw on TV would have anything to do with his brother.

“I was never thinking that that was my brother,” he said. “I was in shock, I was heartbroken and in disbelief. I felt like I was in a nightmare I couldn’t wake up from.”

Parker said some of Mitchell’s friends told him that his brother had gotten into a couple of arguments with different people before his death, but it was no one Parker said he knew.

“He’s my only brother,” Parker said. “As an older brother, I feel cheated. Whoever did it, it was a cruel way to do it. I want justice. I want justice for not only me, but for his mother and the rest of the family because he was really loved by his family.”
