BATON ROUGE — Police are currently responding to a deadly shooting on Airline Hwy. in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant. Baton Rouge Police are investigating numerous shootings since the weekend, five for BRPD and a deadly shooting for EBRSO.
The most recent shooting happened just before 4 p.m. at the McDonald’s at Airline Hwy. near Prescott Rd.
Sources tell UWK a ShotSpotter activation notified police to a shooting nearby. Upon arrival, that’s when officers found a man shot to the head in the parking lot.
The coroner has been contacted.
This shooting outside a fast food restaurant comes less than 24 hours after a 16-year-old was found shot near the Burger King at Perkins Rd. near Staring Lane. That victim was transported to a hospital and their condition is unknown. It’s unclear if the shooting happened at the fast food restaurant or if the victim ended up there after he was shot.
There were two additional non-fatal shootings in Baton Rouge on Sunday, Jan. 19th and two deadly shootings, one on Plank Rd. & another on Greenwell Springs Rd.
In the Plank Rd. shooting, a 14-year-old’s mother turned him in after he allegedly shot and killed a 48-year-old woman because she confronted him about possibly being in a stolen vehicle. That shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. in the 3700 block of Plank Rd. on Jan. 19 and left Latasha Thomas dead.
About 45 minutes later, East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies responded to a deadly shooting in the 38000 block of Greenwell Springs Rd. Despite having a Clinton address, the crime scene was within EBRSO’s jurisdiction. Deputies found a man dead in a driveway outside a vacant home. He had been shot to the chest and died on the scene. The victim’s name has not been released at this time.
There were also two non-fatal shootings on Sunday. One was in the 2100 block of E. Belfair Drive around 6:30 p.m. Baton Rouge Police responded to the scene for a man shot to the chest. The homeowner told officers he and another relative were attacked by the male.
“He gave verbal commands to the male to leave his property. The male approached the homeowner aggressively when the homeowner fired two shots. This investigation is on-going,” BRPD said in a news release.
There was a second non-fatal shooting in the 5900 block of St. Katherine. The victim told officers he and his girlfriend were dropping his child off to his mother. That’s when he said the new boyfriend came out the house and allegedly fired multiple shots. The victim was hit numerous times, but thankfully had non-life threatening injuries.
This holiday weekend crime comes on the heels of a violent last weekend where seven people were injured, including a toddler, in multiple shootings.
