BRPD officer arrested, accused of domestic abuse battery

Baton Rouge Police have arrested one of their own, Michael Mitchell, and charged him with domestic abuse battery after he allegedly used his department issued gun to threaten to kill his girlfriend.

Officer Michael Mitchell was arrested Wednesday morning, Jan. 18th, after his alleged involvement in a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend and the mother of his two children on Sept. 25, 2022.

Mitchell allegedly accused his girlfriend of having an affair with another man. That led to an argument after Mitchell got off of work and was still in his BRPD uniform with his duty weapon. That’s when according to Mitchell’s arresting documents, he “pointed a handgun at her and threatened to kill her.” He’s then accused of using the gun “to strike the victim on the face.”

Mitchell was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He’s been charged with domestic abuse battery with a dangerous weapon, domestic abuse aggravated assault and malfeasance in office.

Mitchell has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation.

Mitchell is a 3-year veteran of the Baton Rouge Police Dept., who is currently assigned to the uniform patrol division.
