Two Brusly officers credited with saving lives during April emergency calls

BRUSLY — The Brusly Police Department just honored both a lieutenant detective and a corporal with “Life Saving Awards” for their roles in two separate incidents last month where they are credited with protecting the lives of those in the community.

In one incident, Lt./Det. Keegan Allen responded to a call where a person was unresponsive. When Lt. Allen got to the scene, he found a man who wasn’t breathing sitting in a wheelchair under a carport with no pulse. He and West Baton Rouge EMS moved the man to the ground and started CPR.

The police department says their quick actions helped the man regain a pulse before he was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. The man was later released and made a full recovery, according to Brusly PD.

In a separate April incident, Corporal Devin Byrd responded to a reported overdose where he found an unconscious woman with extremely shallow breathing. Byrd realized she was suffering from an opioid overdose, grabbed Narcan from his patrol unit, and gave her the life-saving medication and first aid. She regained consciousness before being transported for more medical care and made a full recovery.

Brusly PD recognized both officers for their professionalism, quick thinking, and dedication to protecting the lives of those in the community.
