BATON ROUGE — A car crashed into a Baton Rouge church on Thursday before bursting into flames.
The incident occurred at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church on Scenic Highway, near the intersection of Scotland Avenue and I-110.
Witnesses say that the car collided with the church and subsequently caught fire. Photos from the scene reveal significant damage to the church, with charred remains and appears to show that the car nearly plowed through the entire building.
Baton Rouge Police arrested the driver, Tervont Johnson, 26, at the scene and seized 512 grams of marijuana after obtaining a search warrant. Johnson told officers he was “riding with demons” and admitted to having a large amount of marijuana in the vehicle. He is charged with aggravated criminal damage to property and possession with intent to distribute a Schedule 1 drug.
The vehicle appears to be a Tesla EV with out-of-state license plates.
No injuries were reported.
