Central: “My gun in my car was gone” | Guns stolen during early morning vehicle break-ins

CENTRAL — Central Police officers are investigating a reported string of vehicle break-ins that happened early Tuesday morning.

According to police, around 3:45 a.m. on May 26, two men, wearing masks and gloves started pulling on car door handles in the Evergreen Hills neighborhood. Police say the suspects stole two guns.

A homeowner spoke with UWK, who says the suspects broke into their vehicles and stole both their guns.

“My husband opened his car and saw all of this paper everywhere,” she said. “He thought, ‘Oh, maybe my wife was looking for something.’ Then he sat down and realized he sat on his holster for the gun, and the gun was missing.”

His panic continued and he went back inside and woke up his wife. “He said, ‘We need to check your car,'” she continued. “And my gun in my car was gone too.”

The victim said when they realized their guns were gone, she made a post in a neighborhood group, and everyone started posting pictures and videos.

“There was one guy we all saw on the videos. He was going up to the cars, into the carports, and through fences checking the cars,” she said. “He rummaged through several cars, but no one had anything stolen that I’ve heard of yet, except for us.”

She told UWK that hers and her husband’s cars were both unlocked.

“There are several people in the neighborhood who have spoken to the cops, because the person went through their vehicles, but they didn’t have anything in there,” she said. “I also talked to people, and they’re like, ‘Oh, I have my gun and my wallet in my truck, but thank God it was locked.'”

She said the suspect stopped at every house in the neighborhood.

“I started questioning some of the people at the front of our neighborhood, because it’s a one-way in, one-way out. So I thought that someone has to have cameras up front,” she said. “No one had them. One lady in the front said her cameras were off, which was crazy. She said they’re always on. Someone else said they had two guys on camera going through their stuff.”

The woman said everyone is terrified that the suspects will come back.

“It’s just scary, and it’s just brazen. That’s what the cops are saying, that this is brazen,” she continued. “They went through every house in this neighborhood, outside of the neighborhood, and they’re very lucky that no one caught them.”

The homeowner said she’s surprised that the duo wasn’t scared away.

“In one of the videos, you see him go under the carport, and the lights went on. It did not even phase him one bit. He didn’t even look up, didn’t look down, and just kept walking very methodically.”

Anyone with information on their identities or their whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP or the Central Police Dept. at 225-367-1254. You can also call the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office at 389-5000.
