CENTRAL — Huey Haley, a former Central police officer accused of payroll fraud in October, could be facing additional charges.
Huey Haley was originally arrested on Oct. 28, 2024. An arrest warrant from October alleges Haley reported more than 300 hours to the City of Central he allegedly didn’t work.
In a recent press release, the Central Police Department said that after reviewing payroll records dating back to December 2020, investigators found additional instances of alleged misappropriations by Huey Haley. They now estimate Haley misreported more than 1,400 hours worked which amounted to $24,000 in pay that Haley shouldn’t have been received.
“These acts include reporting of hours for payment where no service was provided, adding additional hours to his timesheet to exaggerate the hours he did work, and several examples of “double dipping,” where Mr. Haley was paid by extra-duty employers and the Central Police Department for the exact same hours,” a press release states.
Haley will not be arrested again for the additional offenses, according to the press release from Central Police.
“Rather we have forwarded our findings to the district attorney for consideration as he reviews the case for prosecution,” the press release states.
Lewis Unglesby, Haley’s lawyer, told UWK that he believes Haley is a victim of “political issues” at play and said he feels Haley will be exonerated.
“I’m confident that when we have the records and the information, we will be able to refute them. I don’t have any reason to believe that the record-keeping at the police department is as precise as would be suggested by these charges,” Unglesby said.
Haley resigned from the department on Oct. 20 after learning of the investigation.
Haley also worked as a full-time assistant warden at the Dixon Correctional Institute at the time of his arrest.
