DONALDSONVILLE — Ascension Parish’s economic boom shows no signs of slowing down. Just two weeks after announcing a major economic development deal in south Louisiana, the state has revealed plans for yet another multi-billion dollar facility to be built in the parish.
CF Industries has announced the Blue Point Complex project, a low-carbon ammonia production facility, which is expected to be constructed and operational within the next four years. Once complete, it is projected to be the world’s largest and most advanced ammonia production plant.
While initial news of the project broke in September 2023, the announcement was made official Tuesday during a joint event with CF Industries executives and Governor Jeff Landry. The project is a joint venture with JERA Co., Japan’s largest energy company, and Mitsui & Co., a leading global investment and trading firm.
The company says that amonia will play an important role in utility and electricity generation.
“Our joint venture represents tangible progress towards building a reliable and affordable low-carbon ammonia value chain to meet what we expect to be robust global demand for low-carbon ammonia for both traditional and new applications,” said Tony Will, president and CEO of CF Industries Holdings.
Construction is slated to begin next year, with production expected to start in 2029. The facility is projected to create more than 100 permanent jobs, with average salaries exceeding $100,000, as well as approximately 1,500 construction jobs during the buildout.
CF Industries is celebrating its 60th anniversary in Donaldsonville this year. It already produces 10 million tons of ammonia annual, the most of anywhere in the world.

Hyundai stated that the plant would generate 1,300 full-time jobs and 4,100 indirect jobs. Company executives said the project is part of a larger $20 billion investment Hyundai is making in the United States.
According to the Louisiana Economic Development Office, the facility will be located on 1,700 acres of sugarcane fields in the RiverPlex MegaPark industrial center.
“Hyundai’s decision to invest nearly $6 billion in Ascension Parish speaks volumes about Louisiana’s skilled workforce, robust infrastructure and our ability to compete for innovative manufacturing facilities,” Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said. “This announcement makes clear that Louisiana’s manufacturing sector is roaring back, thanks to our historic tax reforms, our business-friendly approach and the many competitive advantages our state has to offer international powerhouses like Hyundai.”
President Trump praised the deal, saying it proves that aggressive tariffs on international markets can be effective. He noted that Hyundai will not be subject to tariffs as long as it continues manufacturing in the United States.
“This investment is a clear demonstration that tariffs very strongly work,” Trump said. “And I hope other things also, but the tariffs are bringing them in at levels that have not been witnessed.”
Governor Landry added that by the end of the summer, Louisiana will have more than $50 billion in active construction projects underway.
