Child shot, killed riding 4-wheelers as men target practiced

The Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office has two men in custody after a young child died as the men were allegedly target practicing.

It happened around 4:30pm on Friday, November 18 in Pointe Coupee Parish on Highway 420 near Saizon Rd.

Officials say the men were target practicing on one side of the levee with rifles and handguns when one of the bullets hit a group of children that was on the other side of the levee riding four-wheelers.

The 13-yr-old told his friends he had been shot. By the time his friends went to go get help, the boy had collapsed. He took one bullet to the chest and died from his injuries.

“The sickening part about this whole situation is that you have several grown men behind the levee target practicing and the average person would think they would be shooting towards the river. No, these guys were shooting towards the levee where the trajectory of their bullet would pass towards the top of the levee where our children ride four wheelers and unfortunately, this little child, was on his four wheeler when this bullet struck him in the chest,” said Pointe Coupee Parish District Attorney Tony Clayton.

Clayton will be prosecuting the case and says the alleged crime fits under the manslaughter statute. At this time, the men have not been charged as deputies are investigating.

“I find this to be in egregious act from these hunters and either they knew or should have known that when you recklessly fire a firearm we’re human life is in danger, then you should suffer the maximum penalties under the law, particularly, when a child loses his life,” said Clayton. “The consequence of their actions is that this child will not be able to celebrate Christmas with his family. This is just a travesty of justice.”

Clayton says he will take the case before a grand jury.

The boy’s name has not been released at this time.
