Chlorine release at Olin Plant in Iberville Parish

Iberville Parish officials asked everyone south and east of the Dow Chemical Plant to shelter in place for nearly three hours. Residents were asked to turn off their AC & close the doors and windows immediately.

It came after a release of a ‘mixture of smoke & chlorine’ from the Olin Plant at the Dow Chemical Plant site in Plaquemine.

Woodlawn Rd. & La1 reopened just after 12am.

Multiple firefighters responded to the Dow Chemical Plant in Iberville Parish for the fire/chlorine spill at the Olin Plant on Dow’s Plaquemine site. Officials said is now out. Officials had been monitoring the air quality around the plant. Around midnight, they finally lifted the shelter in place order.


Officials said they did sound the alarms to warn residents.

Statement attributed to Olin Corporation:

A chlorine release has occurred within Olin‘s facility in Plaquemine. Site emergency response was immediately engaged and we are working to stop the release. Employees at the facility took immediate safety precautions while the team began working to address the situation. A shelter in place has been implemented and local roads have been temporarily closed. We will provide additional information as soon as it is available

From Louisiana State Police:

Chlorine Leak Advisory. Plaquemine – Louisiana State Police Emergency Service Unit is responding to a chlorine leak at the DOW Chemical Facility in Iberville Parish. LA Hwy1 is closed in both directions. A shelter in placed has been issued as crews assess this incident.
